The UK cycling market demands a sharper commercial focus than ever before. As digital commerce evolves and consumer expectations rise, retailers must bridge the gap between technical product capability and flawless customer execution.

In Episode #8 of the BikeBiz Podcast, host Pedro Couto Lopes takes readers inside Tredz alongside guest Pippa Wibberley, Director of Cycling at Halfords and Managing Director of Tredz.

Drawing on an extensive commercial background spanning automotive, motorcycle, and central heating distribution, Pippa offers a fresh, cross-industry perspective on what it takes to build a resilient, profitable cycling business in today’s climate.

Meet the Guest

  • Pippa Wibberley: Director of Cycling at Halfords and Managing Director of Tredz, bringing extensive cross-industry commercial leadership across automotive, motorcycle, heating, and cycling distribution.

“Stop talking about product, start talking about proposition. Cycling is an emotion. If it’s all about tech, it becomes anti-inclusive. We are selling dreams—give customers a great experience across the entire journey.”

Pedro Couto Lopes: Pippa, coming into cycling from automotive and heating distribution, how does that cross-industry background shape your leadership today?

Pippa Wibberley: In heating, if your boiler breaks, someone is at your house within 24 hours to mend it. In cycling, you can buy a £7,000 carbon road bike, something goes wrong, and post-sales resolution takes days or weeks. I learned early on that it’s not the product you sell—it’s how committed you are to the customer. When you make the customer the focal point, commercial success follows.

Pedro: Tredz is owned by Halfords, yet Tredz remains profitable as a standalone digital player. How do these two businesses coexist without stepping on each other’s toes?

Pippa Wibberley: Halfords has 370 stores in local communities, while Tredz is the dedicated online bike expert. What Halfords has rightly done is preserve Tredz as a standalone entity. There are no shared IT systems, allowing Tredz to stay agile, develop its digital platform in-house, and move at high speed. We connect where it adds value—like buying conversations—but operational autonomy protects Tredz’s unique proposition.
