For those of you who don't check out the bulletin board (not that many of you, as it happens although most people 'browse' rather than add comments of their own) here's a press release that was posted there earlier...

Plymouth cancelled

The organisers of the UK leg of the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup regretfully announce they will not be hosting the event in 2000. The costs of organising the event, coupled with a reduced amount of sponsorship make it unfeasible to stage. The event was due to be held at Newnham Park over the weekend of the 12-14 May 2000, it is likely that a new venue in Italy will now take on the hosting of round 5 of the World Cup series.

Having hosted the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup successfully for five years it has been a very difficult decision to make. In 1999 Newnham Park was voted the second best Mountain Bike venue in the UCI World Series, and this year was hoping to go one better. Also in 2000, riders for the British Mountain Bike team for the Olympics were to be picked as they crossed the finish line.

Newnham Racing would like to express its sincere thanks to all the volunteers, visitors and sponsors who have supported the World Cup at Newnham, and who have contributed to the past success of the event.

Newnham Racing wish the series every success in the future and express their desire to attempt to bring the World Cup back to Devon in 2001.
