400 riders have signed up for next weekend’s testing Phil and Friends Challenge bike ride.
The event, which starts and finishes in Sheffield on August 18th, is one of two annual challenge events run by CTC. The first, the Ron Kitching Memorial, was held in June at the York Rally. Both events are opportunities to raise cash for CTC’s campaign work for cyclists including the Cyclists’ Defence Fund, a ring fenced account set up last year to protect and improve cyclists’ rights in law.
There will be two routes next Sunday starting from the Lomas Hall in Stannington, Sheffield. Riders leaving between 8am and 8.30am will be aiming to complete the gruelling 96 mile route. Those starting at 9am will take their chances on the shorter but still tough 69 mile course.
The event is not a race but a chance to visit some of the most picturesque parts of the Peak District. Some sections were used by Liggett when he ran the Milk Race, including the climbs of Holme Moss, Rushup Edge and Monsal Head.
Brian Robinson was in the ‘Liggett group’ in last year’s first staging of the event, as was the BikeBiz editor.
Some IBDs shut up shop last year to be on the ride.
Entry costs £5 for CTC and Audax members and £7.50 for non-members. Riders may enter on the day.
