ORTLIEB has introduced TIDURA, a proprietary waterproof fabric system developed to give the German bag specialist greater control over the materials used across its panniers, backpacks and duffles.
The launch marks a significant step for the brand, which says it is now able to oversee the process from weaving and coating through to welding, closure systems and final production at its Heilsbronn campus.
TIDURA will debut in two variants, TIDURA strong and TIDURA core, across a launch range that includes existing ORTLIEB models as well as a new urban daypack.
According to ORTLIEB, the material has been engineered specifically for its high-frequency welded seams, closure systems and quality standards. The company said the move allows it to specify durability, waterproofness, handling and traceability at material level rather than relying on externally sourced fabric systems.
Martin Esslinger, CEO of ORTLIEB, said: “We wanted to define our material’s properties from the ground up. With TIDURA, we control every single step — from the initial thread to the coating to the finished bag. This guarantees consistently high product quality and ensures seamless traceability throughout all production stages.”
The TIDURA fabric is woven in the Benelux region and coated in Heilsbronn by Gesellschaft für dichtende Systeme, a sister company to ORTLIEB. ORTLIEB says the approach supports closer control of production, material performance and product traceability.
TIDURA strong is designed for travel, heavy loads and demanding daily use, with ORTLIEB citing abrasion resistance of more than 100,000 Martindale cycles. TIDURA core is positioned as a lighter, balanced material for commuting and everyday use.
Products made with the new material are rated by use case, with specifications including IP67 full submersion protection, IP64 heavy rain protection and IP53 spray protection, depending on the product. ORTLIEB also states that fabric and welded seams are tested to a 100,000mm water column.
The first TIDURA strong products will include the Back-Roller 20L rear pannier, Velocity 23L commuter backpack, and Duffle 40L and 60L waterproof travel bags. The TIDURA core launch product will be the new Daypack 23L, an urban roll-top backpack with laptop compartment and ventilated TPU back panel.
Launch colours for TIDURA strong products will be Black and Lavender, while the Daypack 23L will be available in Black, Dark Sand and Atlantis Green.
All products will be available through authorised ORTLIEB retailers and via ortlieb.com from September 2026.
