Visitors to the Raleigh boardroom now have a different vista to feast their eyes on. No longer will they see the defunct Sturmey Archer factory: it was blown up yesterday!

Goodbye and thanks for all the gears

Mind you Rome wasn’t built in a day and the Sturmey Archer factory hasn’t disappeared completely. It will take another two momnths to complete the decommissioning, including digging out the heavily-embedded machinery and capping some of the industrial detritus.

The demolition will cost the best part of half a million quid.

Gary Matthews, the former Derby CEO, wasn’t physically present to see the factory go the same way as Sturmey Archer, but, if such a thing were possible, he was there in spirit…
