There are now more than 5,000 people a day riding on the new protected cycleway along Oxford Road and Wilmslow Road in Manchester.
Cycle counters have recorded more than 5,000 cyclists a day on twelve occasions since the highpoint-to-date was reached on 25th September.
The most cyclists counted in one day has been 5,803, which was reached on Tuesday 3rd October.
The counters, which are the first of their kind in Greater Manchester, were unveiled on both sides of Oxford Road, close to the old St Mary’s Hospital, as part of Transport for Greater Manchester’s Cycle City programme. They allow people to see the number of bikes that have passed the counter that day along with an annual cumulative count. Sensors embedded in the cycle track and along the main carriageway detect passing bikes which are then added to the count.
The data from the digital display counters on Oxford Road can be checked on the Eco Counters website.
Councillor Chris Paul, Cycling and Walking Champion for the TfGM Committee, said: “I really is fantastic to see more than 5,000 bike trips on Oxford Road each day.
“We’re aiming to change Greater Manchester’s travel culture and increase cycling and the new counters are providing crucial information to help us measure progress.”
Manchester City Council’s Executive Member for the Environment and Skills, Councillor Angeliki Stogia, said: "It’s great to know that our work along Oxford Road and Wilmslow Road is encouraging thousands of people to get on their bikes and show Manchester at its best – as a modern, cycle-friendly city, that is an attractive place to live, work, visit and study."
The £20-million Department for Transport-funded Cycle City programme has also inolved the delivery of improved cycle parking and facilities at transport interchanges, railway stations, Metrolink stops, workplaces, and social housing sites.
A further £22-million Cycle City investment is being made in additional new and improved cycleways, five new cycle-friendly district centres, and ten additional schools joining a Cycle Schools and Colleges project.
