The London Cycling Campaign (LCC) has welcomed a move by London authorities that will see freight companies take better notice of cyclists.
Following heavy campaigning from the LCC and its members, Transport for London (TfL) and the GLA have added tough conditions to contracts with their transport and freight suppliers.
TFL and the GLA now only buy transport services from freight operators which train their drivers using TfL’s syllabus of ‘Safe Urban Driving’, which features drivers riding a bike in London.
The new contract stipulations list safety features lorries must use, including six safety mirrors and close proximity cameras or sensors.
Over 10,000 signed the LCC’s ‘No More Lethal Lorries’ petition last year.
Cyclist injuries and deaths on London’s roads have all too often been in incidents with HGVs – around half of all cycle deaths in London involve heavy goods vehicles.
