Bristol bike event in memory of Steve Worland will be held annually. First event to be staged on 7th June.

Steve Worland Memorial Cup seeks donation of industry prizes

A memorial event has been created to celebrate the life of legendary bike reviewer and journalist Steve Worland, who died last month and organisers are seeking donation of raffle prizes for a charity draw.

The first "Steve Worland ride singletrack hard & drink a swig of cider memorial cup 2014" will be held as part of Bristol Bikefest on 7th June. Worland died during a run in Ashton Court Park in Bristol.

He also spent countless hours on his Ashton Court test loop.

"From this year onwards we will run the memorial cup in every Bikefest to keep Steve’s presence and spirit on his beloved Ashton Court test route alive," said event co-organiser and journalist Guy Kesteven.

The event is a ‘one category fits all’ affair (so only one big category) where teams of any size battle out to be the winner of the cup and get invited to drink a drop of cider (encouraged but not mandatory) half way around the lap. The winning team will take away a very special trophy, which will stay with them for one year before it gets handed onto the next winner at the 2015 Bristol Bikefest. Every rider will receive a special ‘Steve Worland ride singletrack hard & drink a swig of cider memorial cup 2014’ gift.

"As Steve was an advocate of everything retro, unusual and quirky but also very often ahead of the time – the man rode 650b wheels years before we got our head around 29ers – we invite everybody to ride in retro gear and bring along that retro or unusual bike, anything goes as long as it is safe," said Kesteven.

Proceeds of the event will go to pay for a defibrillator as well as to the Psoriasis Association Charity which were both chosen by Worland’s partner Jo and his daughter Holly. There will also be a post-race raffle and Kesteven is seeking donations of kit from the bike industry.
