Shimano launch Essa 8-speed 1X drive train options

Shimano has introduced a new component name with the arrival of Essa, an 8-speed 1x system aimed at entry-level cyclists and an affordable price point.

Important to note: Essa is not a groupset. Based on the existing Hyperglide platform, Essa-branded products will only include the rear derailleur and front crank, both of which will seamlessly integrate with the existing Shimano products in that range.

Designed specifically to be versatile and robust, Essa is said to mark “an exciting development in the range of accessible componentry and harmonizes an often-complex set of component groups.”

This sees Essa being compatible with the bicycle component maker’s current 8-speed flat-bar Acera, Altus and Tourney TX systems, whilst elevating its existing 8-speed lineup.

In the Japanese manufacturer’s own words, the new Essa components aim “to simplify its product line-up for the next generation of cyclists.”

Shimano sees Essa as being ideal for a wide range of casual sports bikes, including MTB, fitness, and city bikes.

  • A narrow/wide teeth profile will ensure reliable chain retention on the trail.
  • The front single 8-speed gear range will boast a 400% wider gear range.
Critically, the compatibility with Shimano’s current 8-speed Hyperglide systems aims to make life easier for bike retailers and cyclists alike.

CUES Short Reach addition for shifter and brake lever

The second half of 2023 saw Shimano launch the CUES 11/10/9-speed line-up, providing one solution across multiple cycling categories, including trekking and mountain biking.

Shimano has now expanded the line-up to include an updated ergonomic design – optimized for riders with smaller hands – providing a specific solution for every type and size of bicycle.

S-Reach for shifter and brakes

  • The new shifting option reduces thumb travel by 11%, bringing the shifter 12mm and 10% respectively closer to the rider – an ideal solution for smaller hands and younger riders.
  • For brake levers, the new configuration sees the lever positioned 20% closer to the handlebar

UK RRP’s

As a guide, UK pricing will range from £27.99 for the right-hand EZ fire plus STI, to £49.99 for the Essa rear derailleur, with full UK pricing subject to confirmation once landed with UK distributor, Madison.
