Retail village planned for new extreme sports complex in South Wales

A retail village is being planned for a proposed new extreme sports complex in South Wales. The Circuit of Wales has partnered with the Extreme Sports Company to develop the £425m, 336 hectare complex north of Ebbw Vale in Blaenau Gwent. The extreme sports will include MTBing and BMX.

"A collection of indoor and outdoor action and adventure sports, leisure facilities, a variety of food and beverage offerings alongside retail outlets and themed accommodation will breathe life, regenerate and create new jobs in the local area," says a company statement.

The plans are claimed to involve the largest privately-funded infrastructure project in Wales. The Extreme Sports Company is behind the Extreme Sports Channel.

Alongside the existing motorsports circuits on the site the proposed new facilities include MTB trails, a BMX park, an indoor ski zone, and a skatepark. There will also be new hotels and a campsite.

A retail village forms a core part of the development. 10,000 jobs could be created at the centre, claim the developers.

Extreme CEO Alistair Gosling said:

“With the growth and interest we are seeing in our sector, it is fantastic to announce this world leading destination, combining a never before seen collection of sports, entertainment and leisure experiences.”

The Circuit of Wales CEO Martin Whitaker added:

“Our partnership with Extreme underlines the unique range of activities, facilities and services the Circuit’s enterprise cluster will offer Wales and the UK. it will be a 365-day leisure and business destination. The support we have received to date from the racing, automotive and investment communities emphasises the Circuit’s long-term role in boosting tourism, creating jobs and diversifying the local economy."
