Italian company Repente has introduce a saddle with a unique manufacturing and materials process – it uses no glues or solvents
Nova, the latest creation of the Vicenza-based company, reportedly sets new standards in saddle production processes and material reuse: Made without adhesives and solvents, once the rail is extracted, the saddle recycling does not require material separation.
The shell and padding are constructed with a single, fully recyclable polymer, thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), processed with two different densities to achieve the rigid and soft components, which are coupled using an exclusive technology. Furthermore, the TPU developed by Repente does not require a surface coating, so no interface adhesives with the padding are needed.
The production process involves only one step. This reduces production times and costs, as well as the environmental impact associated with energy use and air emissions. This simplification also allows Repente to offer this saddle at very competitive prices: 85 euros with chromoly rails, 69 euros with ST4 steel rails (UK pricing TBC).
The TPU contributes to the uniqueness of this saddle also due to its mechanical properties: shape memory, impact resistance, and permeability even to oily substances.
A refined design
The wide anatomical opening, ‘Close Fit’ ischial support, and ‘Ergo Shape’ side shaping are said to make Nova a versatile and comfortable saddle, suitable for both road cyclists and off-road enthusiasts.
Repente has also introduced the innovative ‘Soft Cell’ concept: the pressure exerted by the cyclist’s body causes a controlled sinking of the padding inside the cells in the shell. This technology adds comfort to the saddle, even if the padding does not feel soft to the touch. The seating surface has an anti-slip effect.
The brand point out that the aesthetics give Nova a distinctive character, whilst the ergonomic design is said to benefit from Repente’s experience over the past 7 years as a partner with professional teams.
