Plans submitted for new Sheffield cycle bridges

Planning applications have been submitted for two new bridges and a new public bridleway for cyclists and pedestrians in Sheffield.

The bridges and path form part of Sustrans’ Connect2 project, creating new everyday walking and cycling links for UK communities. A public vote in 2007 led to a Big Lottery Fund grant of £50 million being dedicated to the scheme.

Previously ‘lost’ routes and canal towpaths will be reclaimed by the new route, which will link Killamarsh to the Halfway tram terminus, the Rother Valley Country Park and the Chesterfield Canal. The two bridges will enable the proposed new bridleway to cross the River Rother and the railway line to the west of Killamarsh.

“This project will provide a fantastic new link for residents of Killamarsh, making it easier, quicker and safer to get into Sheffield without having to rely on a car,” explained Claire Wright, scheme manager for Sustrans. “These bridges will open up a route that local people have wanted for many years. “We hope that local residents looking forward to using the new pathway, be it on foot or by bike, will write in to support the planning application.”

Residents can support the application by visiting the planning potal of Sheffield Council’s website www.sheffield.gov.uk/planning (application number 11/00696/RG3). The application has also been submitted to Derbyshire County Council and will receive a reference shortly.
