P&A has moved already (see the story from last week) but Raleigh Bicycles is still on Triumph Road until new premises are found. What progress is being made?

Nottingham wants Raleigh on former gas works site

Raleigh needs to move out of its current Triumph Road site within two years. The company has stated it wants to stay in Nottingham but Nottingham city council has offered Raleigh just one choice of new location so far.

This is the former Basford gas works, now a brownfield site ready for redevelopment.

Raleigh MD Philip Darnton has yet to commit to the site:

Were looking sympathetically at the gas works site but do not want the choice of just one location. We have an agent looking at other possibilities. An international design group is currently working out the kind of space allocation we will need.

If Nottingham city council fail to come up with more suitable sites, Raleigh may relocate outside of the city boundaries and have been courted by local authorities further afield. Raleigh has been linked to a factory site in Mansfield although a relocation this far away is not ideal for Raleigh.

We want to keep our existing workforce and although they come in to work from a wider area than we first thought, a site close to the existing factory would be the ideal choice, says Darnton.

The gas works site is 1.5 miles from Triumph road.

Raleigh is looking at bare brownfield sites as well as up-and-running business parks.

We dont have to have a new-build, says Darnton. An existing complex may be converted but it has to be admitted its usually cheaper to put something up exactly as you want it.
