Veloce Extreme, Northwave‘s new top-of-the-range road cycling shoe, has won the iF Design Award, presented annually by the Hanover-based iF International Forum Design GmbH, the world’s oldest independent design organisation.
The Veloce Extreme was the only project awarded in the “cycling shoes” category, highlighting the value of a project which combines technology, a scientific approach, and aesthetics.
“This award is the result of a great collective effort, the consequence of our constant quest for improvement and innovation,” says Gianni Piva, Northwave’s founder and president.
“We are also particularly honoured to receive a design award of such importance for a top-tier shoe, proving that performance and style can go hand in hand, in cycling too.”
The iF Design Award has been presented since 1954.
Every year, more than 10,000 entries from around 70 countries are submitted across all categories.
To receive the award, Veloce Extreme was evaluated by an international jury of 132 independent experts, and was awarded based on product innovation, combined with Italy-based design and manufacturing.
Key to winning the award was the Powershape HT sole, made of 100% unidirectional carbon, featuring an asymmetrical ‘High Tail’ design, created to keep the heel in the ideal position in the shoe.
The Powershape HT sole is claimed to increase stability by 9%, reduce perceived effort by 15% and this, the brand says, enables riders to develop 4% more power when compared with the previous generation’s sole.

Performance based success
A number of World Tour riders have opted for the Veloce Extreme – developed with UCI Hour Record holder and Olympic champion Filippo Ganna.
Northwave’s patented technology has led to the development of a cutting-edge product that will support the quest of riders such as Ganna, Belgian Arnaud De Lie and Slovenian Matej Mohoric, for the greatest prizes in cycling, including the road and track Olympic titles in Paris.
Veloce Extreme is available, online and in retail stores, in sizes 36 to 48 (with half sizes from 39.5 to 45.5), in two colours: white and black. The recommended retail price is €399.99.
