IBDs see record sales

Like-for-like bike sales rose 5.8 per cent in July – making it the highest volume sales month for bike dealers in over two years, according to the latest survey from the Association of Cycle Traders (ACT).

The rise follows a 2.2 per cent like-for-like rise in June. 23 per cent of the retailers surveyed saw sales rise 20 per cent compared like-for-like with July 2008, with 15 per cent reporting a 10 to 20 per cent rise, and 15 per cent seeing a 1 to 10 per cent rise.

The positive figures come despite reports that bicycle imports were notably reduced this year. ACT said: “This growth has been achieved despite a significant reduction in bicycle imports year to date and a related overall reduction or flat growth in ‘bicycle’ unit sales, reflecting the buoyancy of the parts, accessory and repair markets.”

However, 17 per cent of respondents saw sales down between one and 10 per cent on a like-for-like basis, with another 17 per cent seeing sales drop more than 20 per cent.
