The Herne Hill Trust has announced a new partnership with Exodus Travels that includes the renaming of the historic site’s new trackside pavilion to the Exodus Travels Pavillion.
The multi-year deal is the final step ahead of the launch of the renovated velodrome which dates back to 1891 and is celebrating its 126th anniversary this year. The partnership goes a long way in helping to secure the long-term financial stability of one of the oldest cycling tracks still in use in the world. In addition to naming the new pavilion, the weekly veterans’ cycling session and the veterans’ league will also become the Exodus Travels Vets Sessions and the Exodus Travels Vets League respectively.
Completion of the Exodus Travels Pavilion will see the final stage of the location’s redevelopment come to a close, completing a period of hard work and determination from the many hundreds of volunteers, supporters and friends in securing the funds and confidence needed to allow this historic site to continue nurturing young talents on their journey to becoming future champions.
Chairman of Herne Hill Velodrome Trust Hillary Peachey said: “We are extremely happy to secure a long-term partner for the pavilion. Working with Exodus will help us increase opportunities for community participation for people of all ages and secure racing. Exodus Travels is the perfect partner for the velodrome.”
Marketing director for Exodus Travels Jane Hopkins commented on the new partnership, adding: “Exodus is a relative youngster in comparison to HHV having run our first adventure in 1974, but heritage is very important to us; we now take more people from the UK on cycle trips abroad than any other company.
“Being able to support this important part of British cycling history as it enters its next phase is really exciting. We already have staff members who use the velodrome and we plan to get more involved with community events too. We can’t wait to see the finished building.”
Following a hugely successful crowdfunding campaign run by the Friends of the Velodrome – aptly named The Big Finish – an amazing £89,089 was raised.
The new Exodus Travels Pavilion is set to be ready for launch this spring, with further details on the grand opening to be announced in due course.
