Amazon and Argos head up the list of most popular retail sites

Halfords and Wiggle rise in Hot Shop 100

The latest ‘Hot Shop 100’ listing has been revealed, listing the top 100 etailers by site traffic, compiled by IMRG Experian Hitwise. maintained its position at the head of the pile, with Argos second – also a non-mover.

Halfords rose to position 30 (May 2011) from 47 (May 2010). Online bike retailer Wiggle rose from 84 to 77, while High Street chain Evans Cycles dropped a few spaces from 81 to 84.

Other sports retailers in the chart, both of which sell bikes, included new entry JJB Sports, rising to 95th spot and SportsDirect up from 50 to 40.

The London 2012 ticket site was, unsurprisingly, a new entry, but it entered the chart at a significant position of 35.

“Although there were some initial concerns about the low volumes of people registering for Olympic tickets, these results show that interest boomed as the cut-off date for applications approached,” commented James Roper, IMRG CEO.

Robin Goad, director of research at Experian Hitwise, said: “This has been another fascinating year for online retail and looking at the churn of websites in the Hot 100 list just goes to show how competitive the online space has become.

"Some companies are choosing to increase their online presence in order to increase the reach of their brand, whilst others are using online as a customer service tool, but ultimately more visits to a website means more sales and it is this reason that is driving the thriving competition between our Hot 100 retailers.”

Wiggle recently secured a deal with Boardman Bikes to sell the brand overseas.
