E-bike sales continue to outperform in Germany

E-bike sales in Germany are continuing to outperform this year, Bike Europe reports.

According to the latest estimates of the German industry association ‘Zweirad Industrie Verband’ (ZIV), around 670,000 units were sold in the first half of 2018.

This is expected to increase to a total sale volume of 850,000 e-bikes for 2018, an increase of 18 per cent compared to last year.

Between January and June the total sale of bikes and e-bikes also increased by 6 per cent to 2.8 million units.

In the same period, the production of bikes and e-bikes increased by 1.9 per cent compared to 2017, to an estimated 1.33 million units.

The import of bikes and e-bikes into Germany increased to around 2.17 million, an increase of more than 10 per cent .

The total import share of e-bikes between January and June was approximately 25 per cent.

The German bicycle industry was successful on the export market too, with an increase to 730,000 units, 11 per cent, and of these, 248,200 were e-bikes.
