Church-based Spoke & Co bike-cafe closes

Spoke & Co of West Bridgeford has closed after just a year. It was housed in a converted church close to Holme Pierpont and the Big Wheel cycle route along the River Trent. Sustrans listed it as one of the top twelve cycle cafes in the UK.

The upstairs bike shop stocked bikes from Giant and Merida. The business also had a Wattbike studio.

News of the closure was carried on the shop’s Facebook page. Co-owners Tim and Rosie Beech said: "The concept had been a dream for many years and we pretty much pulled it off, undone by the biggest slump in bike demand since the early 1990’s – who says timing and luck have no place in business?"

In fact, last month BikeBiz estimated that today’s rate of bike shop closures versus openings is the worst since the 1960s.

"We are gutted," said the Facebook posting, adding thanks to staff and "our landlord" who "shared the dream and invested with us, he is as sad as we are today."
