50,000 cycling opportunities have been created in the lunch of 49 ‘bike libraries’ throughout Yorkshire.
The initiative, which was created as a legacy of the Tour de France and Tour de Yorkshire, aims to give every child in Yorkshire access to a bike.
Yorkshire-based cycling team Holdsworth Pro Cycling sports director Dean Downing and cyclist Jake Womersley took some time out from training to visit Middleton Park Bike Hub to donate bikes, and to see how the initiative is helping the local community.
Downing commented: “It’s great to see Yorkshire lead the way by ensuring children in the county have access to a bike. As a locally based cycling team we are delighted to see any initiative that makes cycling more accessible and who knows, the next stars of the Tour de Yorkshire could start their journey at this bike library.”
This year, Yorkshire Bank and Yorkshire Bank Bike Libraries will combine to sponsor the blue leader’s jersey, as well as being an official partner of the Tour de Yorkshire.
Chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire Sir Gary Verity said: “It’s really great to see a Yorkshire-based cycling team supporting Yorkshire Bank Bike Libraries, our home-grown project from the legacy of the Grand Depart and Tour De Yorkshire, which continues to go from strength to strength.
“I’m sure a visit from Holdsworth Pro Cycling in the week before the Tour de Yorkshire kicks off will ramp up the excitement for everyone – it would be great to see youngsters who use the bike library along the route of the race next week to cheer on the cyclists as they make their bid for success!”
