Wiggins’ Golden Throne to be sold at auction

The golden throne that Bradley Wiggins relaxed on following his time trial gold win at the London 2012 Olympics is to go up for sale.

To be auctioned on November 6th, the Kitsch throne will go during a two-day Sporting Memorabila Auction to be held at Sotheby’s, New Bond Street, London, W1A 2AA. The piece is expected to fetch between £10,000 and £15,000.

In winning the cycling time trial at the London 2012 Olympic Games, Bradley Wiggins overtook Sir Steve Redgrave’s total of six Olympic medals to become Britain’s most decorated Olympian – having won four gold; one silver and two bronze. Later in the Games, fellow cyclist Sir Chris Hoy equalled this number by winning two gold medals.

Specialist in Charge, Graham Budd, said: “I am delighted to be offering this impressive Gold Throne in my November sale. The iconic image of Bradley Wiggins resplendent on his golden throne at Hampton Court Palace led to a series of royal metaphors in the press such as ‘King of Kilburn’ and ‘The Sovereign in the Saddle’. 2012 has definitely been Bradley Wiggins year, not only triumphing at the Olympics, but also winning the Tour de France, just weeks before.”

It is being sold by party planners and prop hire company Theme Traders of North London, Director Kim Einhorn, said: “We are based in Cricklewood, not far from Kilburn, where Bradley Wiggins grew up and we were thrilled to be asked to provide the three thrones for the events at Hampton Court Palace. We had the thrones upholstered for the Olympic Games, and understandably since then, they have attracted much interest from Sky Team and LOCOG among others.”
