German firm develops prototype bike lock capable of climbing vertical posts

VIDEO: The bike lock that climbs lamposts

German firm Conrad has developed a prototype ‘bike lock’ that is capable of climbing lamposts, meaning the thief will need a ladder, as well as a set of bolt cutters to stand a chance of success.

The device is activated via a remote control, which triggers a clamp mechanism to hug the lampost to which it is attached. The lock then rolls its way skywards with the bike in tow.
