Velo Mondial seeks host city for conference in 2012

Every six years a Velo Mondial global conference is organised and goals set for the future of the bicycle.

Velo Mondial 2006 will be based on ‘pedalling towards prosperity’.

"The bicycle is man’s cheapest, cleanest and healthiest form of transport and has to be integrated into all nations’ lifestyles," urge the Velo Mondial directors.

Those who should attend Velo Mondial include government officials, national, provincial and local; urban planning professionals; bicycle manufacturers; and user groups "who consist of anyone who uses the bicycle for work, commuting, recreation or sport."

The final decision on the 2012 location will be made early in 2006, and will be announced at the Velo Mondial Conference in South Africa in March 2006.

A call for papers for the 2006 event has yet to be releases but is expected in Q1 of 2005.

Delegates are encouraged to consider entering and participating in the Cape Argus Pick ‘n Pay Cycle Tour, the largest timed bicycle race in the world, with 35 000 participants.

Starting in in Cape Town, the Cycle Tour is a spectacular 109km ride following the Blue Route leading into Simonstown then turning at Smitswinkel and heading back along the coastline before the steady climb up Chapmans Peak and the short, steep hill of Suikerbossie. It’s then downhill to the finish in Green Point.

Velo Mondial 2006 is a not-for-profit company.

The exectutive directors of Velo Mondial are Oliver Hatch of London, and Pascal J.W. van den Noort of Amsterdam.
