In its latest distributive trades survey, the CBI said 43 percent of retailers reported increased sales volumes and 28 percent reported falls.
This gave a positive balance of +15, down from +45 in May, its highest level in over three years.
The CBI said a pick-up in growth was expected in the year to July, but expectations were at their least positive since February.
"Today’s survey showing a significant slowdown in retail sales is disappointing. Only a month ago we were reporting that retailers’ confidence was at its highest for three years," said Alistair Eperon, chairman of the distributive trades panel.
The CBIs confidence audit is soon going to be available personalised to the bike trade. The first selected IBDs have started to register for our new Barometer function and we may be able to get our first vote going for this Monday. This will be a test audit. A more rehearsed version will appear in the following week once our guinnea pig IBDs have got the hang of things.
