Treks acquisition of the Villiger-Diamant business in late 2002 left the company with two manufacturing facilities in Europe. The decision to move all production to Hartmannsdorf was based on that plants ability to manufacture and paint frames, its excess capacity, and the fact that shorter lead times were feasible because of its proximity to both customers and suppliers, said a statement from Trek.
Tim Callahan, Treks VP of operations, said:
Our Ireland facility has done an excellent job building quality products in a timely manner and it has therefore been a difficult decision for us to make.
"However, the bicycle business in Europe is very competitive and following the Villiger acquisition we had two manufacturing plants where we only needed one. Over the past 11 months our facility in Hartmannsdorf has undergone significant re-organization and we are ready to meet the challenges there that this change will bring.
