Multiples do battle for bicycle business in the run up to the Xmas season

Toys R Us halves bike prices ahead of Christmas

Toys R Us has halved the price of its children’s bikes range ahead of Christmas.

Launched today, the toy retailer’s half price sale is available untill stocks last and includes an accessories money off offer for its email subscribers. Like many multiple UK retailers, Toys R Us tends to stock bikes that specialist cycle retailers don’t.

One of Toys R Us’ fiercest competitors Argos is also running a half price sale on selected top brand ‘toys’, including children’s bicycles.

How are the other multiple retailers using bicycles in the run up to Christmas? Tesco, which stocks adult bicycles as well as children’s – on Tesco Direct.com and it’s in-store bike shops at least – doesn’t currently offer a sale across the board on bikes, but is pushing a ‘Buy Now Pay Later’ option, a timely offering if the recent successes of Ride It Away in the independent sector are anything to go by. It’s a similar situation at Sainsbury’s and Asda too, with scattered sales on bikes only.
