Tern has launched a new version of its HSD compact cargo bike, giving retailers a refreshed family and utility e-bike proposition for customers looking to replace short car journeys without moving to a full-size cargo bike.
The updated HSD retains a compact format shorter than a conventional bicycle, but introduces a redesigned frame, increased carrying capacity, Bosch’s latest drive systems and new shifting options that could help dealers position the model as a premium everyday transport solution.

According to Tern, the bike has been developed to make cargo cycling easier for a wider range of riders, with more stable handling under load and a revised fit designed to accommodate riders from 150cm to 205cm tall.
“Cargo bikes are incredibly useful for replacing short car trips,” said Josh Hon, Tern Team Captain. “But a lot of cargo bikes are heavy, huge, and hard to handle. HSD was our challenge to design a heavy-hauling cargo bike, but to make it as easy to ride as a regular bike.”
For bike shops, the launch also creates scope for accessory-led sales, with passenger, weather-protection and cargo-carrying options designed to help customers configure the HSD around school runs, commuting, shopping and shared household use.
Redesigned for heavier loads

The new HSD features a re-engineered frame with cargo-optimised geometry, a longer wheelbase and a lower centre of gravity, which Tern says improves stability and predictability when carrying passengers or cargo.
The bike has a maximum gross vehicle weight of 190kg and an 80kg-rated rear rack. Tern says it can carry a child, an adult passenger, a pet or everyday cargo, depending on configuration.

Bosch Gen 5 systems and automatic shifting
The HSD range is equipped with Bosch Gen 5 drive systems, described by Tern as lighter, quieter and more powerful than previous versions. The Bosch electrical system is certified to UL 2849, while recent Bosch software updates add theft-deterrence features including Battery Lock and Report as Stolen.
Selected models also introduce Bosch eShift electronic shifting. The HSD S9i pairs eShift with a 3X3 NINE internal gear hub and Gates belt drive, while the HSD P10e combines eShift with a TRP drivetrain and an automatic mode designed for stop-start urban riding.

Compact storage and passenger accessories
Tern has retained features designed to make the HSD easier to store and manoeuvre in urban homes, including Vertical Parking, Vertical Roll and FlatFold technology.
The launch is supported by an expanded accessory range, giving retailers add-on sales opportunities across family transport, weather protection and secure storage. Options include the updated Clubhouse Mini passenger frame, Storm Box Mini rear bucket, Sun Shield Mini canopy, Rain Shield Mini cover, Sidekick Footrests and Hardshell Hauler lockable storage case.

Pricing and availability
The new HSD line-up comprises four models, with pricing starting at $4,999 / €4,899 / £4,300. Bikes are expected to arrive at bike shops in Europe and North America from late summer 2026, with other markets following by the end of the year.
Tern said pricing and model availability may vary by market. The bike will be available in the UK to order via One Generation Ahead (OGA). More information is available at ternbicycles.com/hsd.
