Bristol-based Tailfin has launched a new range of three unique Packing Cubes, designed to integrate perfectly with the brand’s rear AeroPack or AP20 bag system.

The new Packing Cubes have been designed to simplify the packing process and to maximise the capacity inside Tailfin’s Rear Packs by incorporating clever shaping and a unique mix of materials.

Known for producing a specifically-shaped bikepacking bag (the Tailfin AeroPack or AP20 trunk bag), it makes sense to provide a space-maximising solution that helps riders get the best out of their Tailfin gear.

The Tailfin team wanted to go further than that, producing Packing Cubes that would enhance riders’ bikepacking adventures, delivering a product which is:

  • Easy to use whether or not you have gloves on, whether wet or dry, clean or filthy.
  • That will last as long as your bike, and work seamlessly with your gear
  • Which produces a time-saving upgrade to your kit list.

The packs are designed to help riders avoid the dreaded ‘yard sale’ effect – needing to empty the entire ‘house’ on the side of the road, to find one vital item. Splitting kit into sensible-sized ‘rooms’ helps riders keep track of belongings while touring, and, in a race setting, could save significant cumulative time off the bike.

Verses a standard seatpack, the AeroPack/AP20 already has a big advantage in that it is top-opening, but this is at the expense of the real ‘stuffability’ you get with a seatpack. The Packing Cubes are said to offer the best of both worlds.

Packing Cubes ‘need to know’

  • Available in three different sizes, 2.5L, 3.5L, and 6-litre volumes, as a set, or individually.
  • Designed to fit perfectly within the Tailfin AP20 or AeroPack, but useful in any Tailfin bags.
  • Featuring a quick and easy, glove-friendly, opening and closure mechanism.

Evidence-based functionality

Extensive testing at an external testing agency challenged preconceptions and informed fabric choices made for the Bluesign and OEKO-TEX certified Packing Cubes.

This starts with PFC-free, C0, water-resistant fabric that doesn’t shed ‘forever chemicals’.

From a long-term usability viewpoint, the fabric will retain its waterproofing despite washing, unlike most DWR coatings. Extra durability and water resistance have been engineered in where it matters – Packing Cubes can be placed on rough, wet ground again and again without worry about the dry gear inside.

Light in colour, with different coloured zip pullers – not another black item in a black bag –  the addition of reflective graphics also helps users quickly locate bags in a dark tent when using a headtorch.

Material choices. Design details.

This isn’t a new concept – but it’s one on which Tailfin have gone deep into the details to hone.

When you think of a dry bag (or packing cube), you’re probably thinking of something that isn’t really designed to stand up to the wear and tear of bikepacking. Grit, mud, water, vibration, abrasion – you name it, your gear will be subject to forces that want to break it apart.

Each Packing Cube is made with a mono-filament ripstop fabric, which is lightweight, flexible, and water-resistant even after multiple washers. The lower part is specially formulated to have increased tear strength while providing great hydrolysis performance.

Longer-lasting and more functional and feature-packed than less expensive options, whilst being specifically designed to be a perfect fit in the AeroPack/AP20, this is certainly a product for Tailfin fans.

Feature-rich storage solutions for all occasions

The new Tailfin Packing Cubes are stuffed full of clever features and well-considered details, whilst nailing the basics. They’re designed to keep weight as low as possible without sacrificing important features which keep wasted time searching for kit to a minimum.

Nesting beautifully inside an AeroPack/AP20 as a trio, these Packing Cubes can really unlock the space available. The 6-L’s double-ended top zip allows access to anywhere along its interior space without taking it out of the AeroPack/AP20, whilst the 3.5 L’s stretch-mesh outer pocket is perfect for stashing a battery pack and cables for super fast access. The 5 internal pockets of the 2.5 L Cube are perfect for keeping track of those important but miniature items we all need to carry.
