The categories for the Awards are: Best Safety Improvements for Pedestrians; Best Safety Improvements for Cyclists; Best School Champion; Best School Initiative; and Best Local Authority Initiative.
The closing date for entries is 16th May.
The awards will be presented at a conference – Safe Routes to School: Citizenship in
Action – due to be staged in Leicester this September.
Nominations for one or more of the categories needs to be made by two school pupils
who are aged 9 to 18 at the time of entry. Free nomination packs are available from Sustrans by sending an email to awards@sustrans.org.uk or
by downloading from http://www.srsconference.org.uk
Paul Osborne, Director of Sustrans’ Safe Routes to Schools programme, said:
"Adults are constantly complaining about the traffic generated on the school run. This is the chance for young people to have their say about what works and what still needs to change."
Rt. Hon. Charles Clarke, Secretary of State for Education and Skills and a former chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Cycling Group, said:
"These awards are an outstanding incentive to show what all schools could be doing and I hope they will give a lead which others can follow."
The Leicester conference aims to bring together local authority officers, schools and young people with policy makers and practitioners to discuss what is and what should be happening to make an active, safe and healthy journey to school a reality for every school pupil in the UK.
