Sustrans announces projects under New Opportunities

This programme is being delivered by Sustrans as part of the New Opportunities Fund’s Green Spaces and Sustainable Communities initiative. The Green Routes, Safe

Routes umbrella programme aims to deliver sustainable transport projects targeted on disadvantaged areas across England.

It should produce social, economic and environmental benefits by providing safe cycling and walking routes to and within green spaces as well as safe routes to schools and stations.

£7.42m of National Lottery funding is being spent on Green Routes, Safe Routes projects

over a three-year period, that started in June 2001.

Some of the projects announced today are already underway such as the Fallowfield Loop project in Manchester. The first phase of the Fallowfield Loop opened on the 28th April and consists of 10 miles of cycle and walking path largely built on a disused railway line which loops around central Manchester, linking in several schools, and ending at the site of the Commonwealth Games. The whole route, being developed with Manchester City Council, will be complete by the time the Commonwealth Games opens in August.
