SRAM Cycling Fund awards $200k to Euro bike campaign org

This is the first time the fund has awarded money to a scheme outside of the USA. $10m will be awarded over the next five years

The SRAM Cycling Fund has awarded a $200,000 grant to be paid over two years to the European Cyclists’ Federation. These funds will be used by the ECF for lobbying efforts at the European Commission and European Parliament to build support for improved cycling infrastructure throughout Europe.

The European Cyclists’ Federation was founded in 1983 by 12 bicycle user associations. It now has 56 member organizations in 38 countries. Manfred Neun, the president of the ECF, emphasized the mission of the ECF is to ensure that bicycle use achieves its fullest potential so as to bring about sustainable mobility and public well-being. To achieve these aims, the ECF seeks to change attitudes, policies and budget allocations at the European level.

The Secretary General of the ECF, Bernhard Ensink said: "The SRAM Cycling Fund grant will accelerate our efforts to educate and convince European political leaders of the importance of bicycles as part of daily transportation, recreation and tourism."

Stan Day, the president of SRAM, said: "The ECF has demonstrated its committment and leadership in advocating for cycling infrastructure across Europe. The SRAM Cycling Fund is excited to provide these funds and looks forward to finding additional ways to support European cycling advocacy efforts".

This is the fifth in a series of awards made by SRAM’s Cycling Fund, which was created in September 2008. During the next five years, the Fund plans to award $10m in grants to support committed national advocacy efforts that enhance cycling infrastructure, safety and access.

The previous grants were to:

$200,000 to the Safe Routes to School National Partnership

$200,000 to the International Mountain Bicycling Association

$200,000 to the Bikes Belong Coalition

$400,000 to League of American Bicyclists and Thunderhead Alliance for Biking and Walking
