Shimano has unveiled its EP810 e-bike system, introducing automatic assistance adjustment alongside an updated Auto Shift function and a new range of connected components.

The platform is positioned at the top of Shimano’s e-bike system line-up and targets mountain bike enthusiasts and top-level athletes. Its DU-EP810 drive unit delivers up to 100Nm of torque and 750W peak power, with a claimed weight of 2.3kg.

The motor features a magnesium alloy cover with integrated cooling fins and supports cadences up to 160rpm. Shimano says its redesigned internal structure reduces mechanical noise, while refined power delivery is intended to provide smoother transitions on technical terrain.

Automatic shifting and assistance

Auto Assist is integrated into the new TRAIL+ mode and adjusts motor support according to terrain and rider input. The system monitors gradient and riding conditions to adapt power output in real time.

According to Shimano, assistance increases in a controlled way on climbs to help traction and limit wheel slip or front-wheel lift. Support is reduced on descents, while power use is minimised on flat terrain to help conserve battery range.

Shimano calls the combination of Auto Assist and Auto Shift “True Auto”, describing a system that coordinates gear selection and motor support.

Auto Shift Gen 3 combines Di2 electronic shifting with an updated algorithm and motion sensing. Riders can adjust cadence preference within a ±3 range directly on the bike, without using an app.

The release lists Auto Shift availability across Shimano Di2 drivetrains including XTR, Deore XT, Deore, GRX and Cues.

Connectivity and trail functions

The new Shimano Connect app brings system customisation, component updates and ride tracking into one interface, with a system lock function also included.

Alongside the app, Shimano is introducing D-FLY+, a wireless protocol which it says offers faster data transmission and stronger protection for wireless communications.

D-FLY+ is not compatible with previous D-FLY systems and is supported only on EP810 and later platforms. Compatibility is therefore a consideration when specifying connected components.

Hill Hold and Lift & Shift are designed to help riders restart after stopping on an incline. With Walk Assist activated uphill, the motor can help hold the bike in position. Lift & Shift allows the system to select a lower gear while the rider lifts the rear wheel.

Assist Remain is intended to smooth support when pedalling input becomes uneven or briefly drops. Assist Carry Over continues assistance for a short period after pedalling stops, with the duration adjustable to suit terrain and riding preferences.

The component range includes the top-tube-mounted SC-EN700 cycle computer and handlebar-mounted SC-EM810. The latter has a full-colour display showing Auto Shift status, assist mode, speed, time, range and distance.

The SW-UT600-LR wireless three-button switch can be fitted on either side of the handlebar. An EW-USB30-C module provides a USB-C port with a 5V, 1.5A output to power external devices.

Battery, pricing and availability

The BT-EN827 integrated downtube battery has a capacity of 720Wh, a voltage of 43.2V and an approximate weight of 4.1kg. It measures 420 × 84 × 73mm.

Charging options include the EC-EN832 2A charger and the faster EC-EN834 4A model. The wider range also includes drive unit covers and guards, crank arm sets, a 12-speed chainring, battery mounting components and compatible Di2 rear derailleurs.
