Shimano Expands GRX with ‘more affordable 1 x 12-speed GRX Di2 options’

With the introduction of the GRX RX717 component lineup, Shimano is bringing robust Di2 electronic shifting to more gravel riders than ever before.

That’s the headline as the Japanese electronic shifting pioneer brings an expanded range of gravel-specific components to market, with the aim of offering products “that fit every rider and every budget”.

At launch, we’re told that this new series of 12-speed GRX components utilises Shimano’s established Di2 electronic shifting platform. So far, so trickle down. The RX717 range includes a right-side Dual Control lever, two left-side brake-only lever options (one GRX-branded, the other Shimano-branded), and the GRX RX717 rear derailleur, which, when paired with a 10-51T 12-speed cassette, “delivers the range, reliability, and shifting speed needed for any off-road adventure”.

Key Features

Fully Wireless Di2 Platform – Designed for ultimate reliability, the wireless Di2 system offers fast, precise shifting and compatibility with all Shimano 12-speed wireless shifters (GRX, Dura-Ace, Ultegra, Shimano 105 Di2 drop bar options, as well as XTR, Deore XT, and Deore flat bar Di2 models).

Robust Gravel Drivetrain – Borrowing its design from Shimano’s MTB Di2 line, the RX717 rear derailleur features the same low-profile design, skid plate, protected battery, and Automatic Impact Recovery function.

Expanding the GRX component options offers more riders the option to optimise performance based on terrain, style, and personal budget. That said, the ‘more affordable’ aspect is not exactly stop the press. A saving on other Di2 options: Yes. Affordable: That depends on your definition. Does SRAM’s comparable offering cost less? Yes. Will we see GRX RX717 as OE on a host of bikes? Very likely.

GRX RX717 Levers: Customizable control

Shimano highlights the GRX 12-speed ST-RX715-R Di2 Hydraulic Disc Brake Dual Control lever as a notable feature of the lineup.

The RX717 right-side lever offers a more affordable 1 x 12-speed wireless shifting option, combining Shimano shifting and braking performance.

Key features include:

  • Reach Adjust – Dial in personalised ergonomics and feel
  • Long-Lasting CR1632 Batteries – Up to four years of use, easy to replace
  • E-Tube Project Cyclist App Compatibility – Customise shift buttons and features

For a simplified and lighter cockpit, riders can pair the ST-RX715-R with the GRX-branded left-side BL-RS717 Hydraulic Disc Brake lever, which matches the right lever’s ergonomics and adjustability.

Interestingly, riders already using Dura-Ace ST-R9270, Ultegra ST-R8170, and Shimano 105 ST-R7170 can also opt for the Shimano-branded left-side BL-RS717-LS as a lower-cost option that offers the same ergonomics and feel.

How my OCD feels about mismatched left/right graphics… what’s been seen can’t be unseen. Let’s just leave that here!

GRX RX717 Rear Derailleur

At the heart of the system is the fully wireless GRX RX717 rear derailleur, designed for rugged reliability and seamless shifting.

 Automatic Impact Recovery – Instantly returns the derailleur to its original position after an impact
 Wide Link Structure and Skid Plate – Designed for off-road durability
 Shadow ES Technology – Delivers superb chain stability and security
 Protected Battery Housing – Keeps the battery tucked away and out of harm while allowing easy access for charging

The derailleur uses the same battery as GRX RX827, XTR M9250, Deore XT M8250, and Deore M6250, making battery swaps between bikes simple and convenient.

Like all Shimano electronic Di2 systems, the RX717 derailleur and RX715 Dual Control lever are compatible with the brand’s easy-to-use E-Tube application. When paired, it allows you to choose your preferred shifting speed, customise shift buttons, and update rear derailleur firmware.

The new GRX RX717 lineup extends Shimano’s gravel-specific performance offering, now at a more accessible price point. By blending affordability with Di2’s reputation for robust reliability, GRX RX717 components offer the Shimano experience to more gravel riders.
