The 105-year old Brum tube maker is flagging up the development of the seamless, mandrel-butted tubing as 'previously considered impossible'. The 6Al-4V titanium tubing is said to be 20 percent stronger than 3Al-2.5V. Reynolds MD says the tubing will be perfect for "dream bikes".

Reynolds introduce extra-strong Ti-tubing for bikes

Using a special grade of seamless billet, aerospace company Fine Tubes Ltd., is producing custom drawn raw material for Reynolds, designed for mandrel butting. Fine Tubes is an accredited supplier to Airbus and Rolls Royce.

Reynolds Cycle Techology MD Keith Noronha said several manufacturing obstacles had to be overcome by both Fine Tubes and Reynolds before the ti-tubesets could be produced commercially.

"Seamless 6-4 titanium tubing is innovative, and producing mandrel butted tubing takes this great material a step further," said Noronha.

The company has concentrated on high performance cycle tubing since an MBO in January 2000. Reynolds exports the great majority of its steel, aluminium and titanium tubes to America.
