New EU rules may mean owners will have to start insuring lawnmowers, golf buggies, mobility scooters … and electric bikes. The Times reports that full motor insurance will be required for all motor vehicles, including those that never leave private land. This is to comply with a new EU directive.
The Department for Transport is believed to be working on a "derogation", or exemption, for certain classes of motorised vehicles.
Given that there are 1.2 million motor cars in Britain that are driven without valid insurance it’s unlikely people will rush out to insure their lawnmowers, or e-bikes.
