News International dropped as 'exclusive media partner'

NOTW hacking scandal sees NI lose exclusive London 2012 access

The impact of the newspaper hacking story has reached into the world of cycling and the Olympics with the news that the scandal has led to curbs on News International’s access to London 2012 stars, as reported by the Media Guardian.

News International, owner of The Sun, The Times, The Sunday Times and the ill-fated and now defunct News of the World, did have a deal giving its UK newspapers exclusive access to Team GB athletes.

New ‘official media partners’ are now being sought by Team 2012, the official support programme for British athletes representing Team GB and Paralympics GB in London 2012.

A spokesperson for Team 2012 said: "As a result of the closure of News of the World the contract can no longer be fulfilled as originally envisaged".

Tomorrow (Saturday July 22nd) is the start of London 2012 Open Weekend, marking one year to go until the games begin.
