No-more-two-tribes history book hits best seller lists

The multimedia iPad version of Roads Were Not Built For Cars by BikeBiz executive editor Carlton Reid went online last night and has stormed up Apple’s best seller charts. It is currently third in the history category, ahead of books by noted historians Max Hastings and Bill Bryson.

The iPad version contains the full 170,000 words from the print book as well as ten videos, a 3D model that can be spun, and more than 580 high-resolution, full-screen illustrations. It costs £14.99.

Last month, 100 hardbacks for Reid’s book sold out in six hours. The book is also available in Kindle and ePub versions.

Reid says he’s on a mission to build bridges between motorists and cyclists, showing both "tribes" that they have a shared history. The book’s foreword was written by Edmund King, president of the Automobile Association, and Reid has taken the book’s message on motoring.co.uk. The motoring website currently has an article headlined "Why motorists owe everything to cyclists."

"That’s not my headline," said Reid, "but I do think it’s important that cyclists and motorists – who are usually the same people, of course – realise that cycling and motoring have an awful lot more in common than is usually imagined."
