British start-up Newlane is making cycling safety history by launching the first-ever folding helmet integrated with MIPS technology.
The MIPS safety system – used by more than 150 helmet manufacturers worldwide, including over 75 cycling brands – is designed to help redirect rotational motion away from the head during angled impacts. For the first time, this proven technology is now available in a helmet that folds small enough to slip into a backpack or handbag.
Launched in late 2024, Newlane’s award-winning, UK-manufactured helmet has quickly become a favourite among commuters and bike-share riders thanks to its compact, practical design. By adding MIPS tech, Newlane is taking urban cycling safety one step further.
“We’ve spent six years refining and safety testing our helmet, and it already meets strict EU certification standards,” says Newlane Co-Founder Dom Cotton. “By integrating the MIPS system, we’re adding a new layer of safety in many impacts and taking urban cycling safety to the next level. We’re proud to be the first foldable helmet brand to adopt this world-renowned technology.”
Newlane began collaborating with Swedish-based MIPS in mid-2024, following an initial meeting two years earlier. After extensive prototyping and testing, MIPS confirmed that the helmet’s patented two-part design works seamlessly with their system.

The result is a foldable helmet that doesn’t compromise on safety – a low-friction layer inside the helmet is designed to allow a movement of 10-15 mm in all directions in certain oblique impacts during a crash, helping to redirect rotational motion away from the head. This is intended to help reduce the risk of brain injury.
“We are proud to collaborate with Newlane on this world-first foldable innovation,” says Max Strandwitz, CEO of MIPS. “We welcome innovations that help make helmet safety more accessible and encourage more people to wear a helmet on their daily commute. Newlane’s solution for urban cyclists, paired with Mips technology, aligns with our commitment to keep advancing helmet development.”
The Newlane x MIPS helmet will be available to buy from November 17th at wearenewlane.com and other selected sites.
