New York City has its sights on creating the huge bike hire scheme, according to a report in the New York Times.
The plans have yet to be made official, but it seems the NYC hire scheme will see cyclists able to rent bikes from kiosks set up across the city, much like hire schemes in other cities around the world – including London’s ‘Boris Bikes’. The initiative would likely use a subscription model.
The city has recently seen the installation of over 200 miles of cycle lanes, due in part to New York City’s transportation commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan. Speaking on the cycling in the city last year, she said New York was “an ideal city for cycling” and discussed the potential of a bike hire scheme.
“There’s a lot of interest in it. Half of the trips in New York are under two miles, and we’re essentially flat, so we’re in a great position to be able to take advantage of that way of getting around.”
Reports from other news outlets have stated the proposed bike hire scheme in New York City would be the biggest in the US.
