Move over Boris: Dublin gets bike championing Lord Mayor

Andrew Montague was elected Lord Mayor of Dublin yesterday (source: The Irish Times).

Montague is the man behind the successful Dublin bike scheme and was elected on Monday with 29 votes.

The Lord Mayor has expansion of the bike scheme in his sights, including bringing an additional 1,000 bikes and 40 stations into the scheme, including at Heuston Station, and also to see completion of work on the premium cycle routes around the city’s canals.

Montague said: “We can drive the rejuvenation of our capital city by promoting trade and tourism, further developing our transport infrastructure and making Dublin an exciting and safe place to live and work in for native Dubliners and new arrivals."

Dublin’s bike hire scheme pre-dates London’s Barclays Cycle Hire scheme, in operation since September 2009. There are currently 44 ‘dublinbikes’ stations in Dublin city centre and the first half hour use of a hire bike is free, as with the London scheme.
