Rupert Parson and three friends receive free five-year membership

Millionth Cycle Hire user rewarded with free membership

To celebrate one million journeys via the London Cycle Hire, Transport for London has rewarded the milestone rider and three friends free five-year membership.

Rupert Parson, a 37-year-old technology specialist, from Balham, South London, has been identified as the millionth rider of Barclay’s Cycle Hire.

As a special thank you, Barclays has awarded Rupert and three friends free annual membership of the scheme for five years, as well as a cycling makeover at Bobbins Bicycles in Islington.

When asked how he felt about completing the millionth cycle hire journey, Rupert said, “It was a complete surprise, and I have to say that I thought it might be a practical joke when first took the phone call.”

“I normally commute on my bicycle along the Cycle Superhighway 7, but there are times when I have to take the tube, and on those days the Barclays bikes are perfect for taking me the last mile to work."

Meanwhile, Barclays sponsorship of the scheme has recently come under attack, with some bikes receiving a little sticker customisation.
