The new academic year will see Leeds University students get access to an even larger fleet of bikes as part of the city’s bike loan scheme.
Now in it’s third year, ‘Velocampus Leeds’ boasts 400 bikes and has expanded to include Leeds Trinity University College as well as the University of Leeds and Leeds Metropolitan University.
An expanded team will run the Velocampus bike hub, having been trained as accredited national standards cycle trainers. Staff will also offer cycle maintenance, cycle confidence traiing,bike buddying and route planning.
“Last year demand outstripped supply and we had lots of very positive feedback from students," explained Lisa Brannan, project manager for the scheme.
The project is part of ‘UTravelActive’ – a Big Lottery funded project delivered by the Leeds Universities, Sustrans, Leeds City Council and NHS Leeds.
Brannan added: "This year we are building on this success with more bikes, more cycle parking, the Bike Hub, more activities and a bigger team meaning we can support more people cycling for everyday journeys. Cycling is a great way to get around and not only gets people active but helps cut traffic congestion in the city.“
Jack Chevette, Welfare officer at Leeds University Union has used the scheme himself: “Having a bike has made travel into Uni quick and easy. It used to take me 35 minutes to travel in and now it takes me 10 minutes. Firstly it means I get longer in bed and secondly it means I’m healthier and fitter. The bike is comfy and easy to ride and for £35 a year – it’s a bargain!”
