Response to London Mayor's 'way to go' document

LCC outlines its city cycling vision

The London Cycling Campaign has published its views on how to get the city cycling and what measures should be in place to stimulate this.

Among other proposals, the organisation puts forward the idea of ‘car-free Sundays’ and the creation of a ‘healthy travel network’.

"The current public health crisis needs bold action. Encouraging boroughs to make selected areas car-free for one day a week is a great way to get kids and families outside enjoying themselves energetically," said LCC chief executive Koy Thomson.

"A Healthy Travel Network would involved creating low-traffic or traffic-free routes to encourage people to cross the city by foot or bike."

Thomson added: "The mayor’s new cycling projects – cycle hire, cycle highways and town centre hubs – have great potential provided we learn from what has worked in the past, and these new measures complement and expand, rather than replace, existing initiatives."
