Bike messengers brainstorm lock ideas – Kryptonite creates security range “for messengers by messengers.”

Kryptonite creates Messenger Collection after listening to messengers

Kryptonite’s new Messenger Collection has been inspired by a hands-on focus group sessions with New York City messengers, including Kevin “Squid’ Bolger, a Kryptonite brand ambassador and bike messenger for over twenty years. The security brand has published teaser videos showing the messenger focus groups in action. The messengers – who put their existing security products through 20-40 lock/unlock cycles each day – were given art materials and other props in order to fire their imaginations. Kryptonite product managers and industrial designers then took 30+ ideas to the drawing stage before creating mock-ups and then the final products.

Daryl Slater, Kryptonite’s Customer Experience Manager, said: “I’ve have had the privilege of hanging with some great messengers for the last 8 months, and what a privilege. To see how they earn their paycheck each week firsthand, and to see how they have a passion for being on their bike all day, and for seeing how we protect what is their economic livelihood has been exciting.”

The new collection highlights the core needs of a messenger: fit and versatility with lots urban infrastructure to fit locks around; durability; and simplicity, creating a one-lock solution.

The collection will be unveiled at Eurobike at the end of the month and at Interbike.
