Lyon Equipment Limited is an employee-owned company, located between the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales. Collectively we are mountain bikers, gravel riders, rock climbers, skiers, ultra-marathon runners, mountaineers, canoers, paddleboarders and outdoor enthusiasts.  We are passionate about what we do, and the planet we live on.  

In the markets that we supply we are best known as the U.K and Ireland distributor for Ortlieb, La Sportiva, Salsa, Exped, Industry Nine, Teravail, 7mesh and Julbo to name but a few. We are also the Petzl U.K and Ireland agency. Our extensive portfolio includes many leading brands, making us a unique and valuable distributor to a large customer base throughout our territory. 

Our company’s aim is to provide ‘equipment and expertise to venture further’ to the cycle, outdoor, watersports, work at height and rescue markets. We pride ourselves on being a supplier of quality products in, enabling customers to push their boundaries and extend their horizons. 

In addition to distribution, we manufacture our own Lyon branded products and provide technical training for the work at height and rescue industries.

The role: 

Due to the growth in Ortlieb and ever-increasing market channels we are seeking to appoint an Ortlieb Brand Development Manager. 

We are looking for a commercially minded individual who is self-motivated, enthusiastic and organised with brand management and sales experience. A strong passion for outdoor activities including cycling, watersports, camping and walking and a keen interest in travel and outdoor fashion would be beneficial. Prior knowledge of our products would be advantageous. 

The role will cover sales, marketing, brand development and dealer management.   

Key areas in which the suitable candidate will operate: 

Sales 

You will be responsible for: 

  • Managing key accounts that fall outside our core sales channels 
  • Setting goals and developing plans for business and revenue growth 
  • Researching, planning and implementing new target market initiatives 
  • Researching prospective accounts in target markets 
  • Pursuing leads and moving them through the sales cycle 

 Protecting the brand 

As the guardian of the Ortlieb brand within the UK and Ireland, you will be responsible for ensuring that the products, services and product lines resonate with current and potential customers. Additionally, you will work with sales to ensure that the Selective Distribution Contracts are being honoured. 

Working with relevant departments within the company 

You will work closely with the department managers and sales and marketing team, ensuring that every aspect of the brand strategy is fit for purpose. 

In this role there is also the need to be in contact with other departments within Lyon such as finance, purchasing and logistics to ensure a strategic overview of the brand and future market opportunities. 

Marketing 

Creation of and adherence to marketing budgets and strategies ensuring sustainable long-term growth of the brand. 

There will be a requirement to support the work of the marketing team with key brand information to ensure maximum brand visibility and that marketing strategies align with sales campaigns and target markets. Further to this you will be overseeing and implementing key marketing initiatives including trade and consumer shows and events. 

Focusing on the consumer 

In this role you will need to be able to draw on consumer research and monitor market trends. Therefore, having a grasp of key markets and potential target markets is key.Close monitoring of the effectiveness of marketing campaigns, word of mouth and digital media is imperative. 

It is also important that key public events are attended, such as The Cycle Show and pop-up events around the country. 

Key brand contact 

You will be the key contact with Ortlieb. This includes: 

  • Regular liaison with Ortlieb directly  
  • Feeding information back to departments within Lyon 
  • Ensuring sales representatives have all the information they need 
  • Meetings with Ortlieb in person, often internationally 
  • Attending trade shows 

Digital platforms

As Ortlieb uses an omnichannel sales model, maintaining the brands B2C touch points is essential. By working alongside the brand and in house web developers, you will ensure that the customers experience is outstanding and Ortlieb’s presence is in keeping with that of the brand’s desires.   

The job will involve: 

  • Being the central contact for Ortlieb 
  • Working with the Head of Sales and Marketing to develop a rolling 5-year sales and marketing strategy for the brand and to communicate this with Lyon staff, suppliers and customers as appropriate 
  • Reporting on the brands growth and profitability as well as barriers to sales at regular management meetings and director meetings where appropriate 
  • Participation at overseas supplier meetings 
  • Providing specific market feedback  
  • Working with the purchasing department with ranging decisions, forecasts and price pointing 
  • Coordinating product launches across sales and marketing channels 
  • Provision of training and support to Lyon staff and customers  
  • Managing the clearance of end of line product in a timely and profit conscious manner  
  • Remaining up to date with competitor products 
  • Supporting the customer services department 
  • Supporting sales representatives 
  • Supporting marketing in the execution of the brand’s marketing strategy and assisting with organisation of events such as house shows, trade shows and consumer shows 
  • Attendance of shows and events where appropriate 
  • Networking within relevant industries to remain aware of developments, explore potential brand collaborations and to increase awareness of Ortlieb 

The person we seek will meet the following criteria: 

  • Have a genuine passion for the brand and knowledge of both established markets (cycle) and growth markets (outdoor and travel) 
  • Be self-motivated, able to work autonomously and as part of a team 
  • Have a proven track record of brand management and sales 
  • Have a confident and outgoing manner with excellent interpersonal skills 
  • Have excellent preparation skills and have the ability to observe, evaluate and give meaningful feedback 
  • Have strategic planning abilities 
  • Have excellent negotiation skills 
  • Be able to communicate information efficiently and accurately in a focused manor 
  • Be able to demonstrate strong analytical skills 
  • Be organised, articulate, numerate and computer literate 
  • Hold a current full car driving licence (preferably clean) and a current passport 
  • Have the confidence to work remotely 

The successful candidate will be provided with the following:

Hours of work: 

This is a full-time position which on average equates to 37.5 hours a week. We would expect the majority of work to be carried out between Monday and Friday, however this position will require regular overnight stays and some weekend working. This position can be based from Tebay or home, albeit with regular days working from the office.

  • A commencing salary likely to be in the region of £29,000 – £33,000
