Sales of bicycles have outstripped those of motor vehicles in Italy for the first time since the 60s.
According to local media, 1.75 million bicycles were sold domestically last year, a larger figure than that of the number of cars registered.
La Repubblica, an Italian newspaper reports that, despite an incredibly strong cycling heritage, cars have trumped cycle sales every year since 1964.
Italian president Giorgio Napolitano has also reported recently stated he wishes to see his homeland ‘catch up’ with other European countries by improving cycle infrastructure on the roads.
