International bike orgs want mayors to sign up to pro-bicycle charter

The central part of the Let’s get Moving programme is a charter called: ‘Action Plan for Bicycle Friendly Communities’.

The charter asks mayors and elected city officials around the world to commit to taking steps that improve conditions for cycling.

A ceremonial signing of the charter will take place during the ‘International Symposium on Bicycle Friendly Communities’ on March 4th, 2004. This will take place in The World Bank Headquarters Building in Washington DC, and will conclude with a reception to celebrate the signing of the charter on Capitol Hill.

Once city representatives have signed the charter, they will be sent questionnaires asking for information that will allow the programme to determine the status of the city’s ‘Bicycle friendliness’.

The award categories are bronze, silver, gold and platinum.

In Europe, judging will be by Velo.Info, a Centre for Cycling Planning Expertise to be up and running by April. In the US, judging will be by the League of American Bicyclists.

The awards will be presented at the Velo Mondial 2006 conference in Cape Town, South Africa.
