British security brand Hiplok marks 15 years since its first sale on 17 March 2011. That product was the world’s first wearable bike lock.

The idea for Hiplok began in 2009 when co-founder John Abrahams’ bike was stolen. John and fellow rider and industrial designer Ben Smith co-founded the company to solve a simple problem: how to carry a strong lock easily.

The result was the Hiplok ORIGINAL, a patented wearable chain lock designed to be worn around the waist while riding, without being locked to the body.

With the brand’s design-led approach to security established, Hiplok developed AIRLOK, the first and only high-security bike storage hanger certified to Sold Secure Pedal Cycle Diamond. It later introduced the reusable steel-core Z LOK security tie, creating a new category of lightweight security for quick stops and everyday use.

As theft methods evolved, the company focused on protection against power-tool attacks. In 2021 Hiplok introduced the D1000, the world’s first portable anti-angle-grinder D lock. This led to the Hiplok 1000 Series, a range of grinder-resistant locks and anchors designed for use both on the street and at home. Hiplok remains the only brand to offer anti-angle-grinder ground and wall anchors for home and garage security.

“From the beginning, our focus has been on solving the problems riders face,” said John Abrahams, Hiplok co-founder. “Over the past 15 years bikes have become more valuable and theft techniques have evolved. Every product we’ve developed has come from understanding those real-world challenges and designing practical solutions riders can trust.”

What began with a single wearable lock has grown into a full range of security products and accessories, with Hiplok now supplying retailers and distributors worldwide. In 2023, the company expanded into motorcycle security, applying the same approach to a wider two-wheel market.

Ben Smith, Hiplok co-founder, added: “Each stage of Hiplok’s development has come from rethinking what a lock can be, not just in how it performs but how riders interact with it. From wearable locks to anti-angle-grinder security, we’ve built the brand around product design that makes security easier to use.”

Fifteen years on, Hiplok continues to expand its anti-angle-grinder security range, with further product launches planned for later in 2026.
