Half-hour prog on Bicycle Music airs on Radio 4 today

Long-distance racer Mandy Jones and Tour De France Brit Brian Robinson are among those who talk to Graeme Fife about the music the bike has inspired and the music of the machine itself – the rhythms, the sound of the tyres and the spokes that need to be musically in tune.

The programme also includes contributions from playwright Alan Bennett and cycle-touring author Dervla Murphy.

Music featured include music-hall favourite ‘Daisy Daisy’, saucy songs by Betty Bolton and Max Miller, Queen’s ‘Bicycle Race’, and the ‘Pushbike Song’ by Oz-group the Mixtures (‘Riding along on my pushbike, honey’, often confused with Mungo Jerry’s summertime classic).
