Four ‘hubs’ of Freewheel announced

Four ‘hubs’ have been announced in advance of The London Freewheel, taking place on September 21st. The ‘hubs’ are essentially meeting points at which riders can meet groups and marshals who will guide less experienced riders around London’s 12km of bike-dedicated roads.

Last year’s inaugural event saw over 40,000 people take part. Riders of all ages and all abilities can take in views of the Tower of London, the Houses of Parliament, the London Eye, Trafalgar Square, and Buckingham Palace among other sights.

The four hubs, open from 8am, are:
The Emirates stadium, North London
Clapham Common, South London
Victoria Park, East London
Ravenscourt Park, West London

Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, said:
“Cycling is a fantastic way to get around the city and, to show people just how enjoyable it can be, on 21st September cyclists of all ages and abilities can enjoy some of London’s most famous sights by bike on a special car-free route.
“There are lots of Londoners who own bikes but aren’t using them regularly, so hopefully this event will remind people what fun it can be. The fantastic marshals who will be leading participants from every part of the capital to the central London route mean that everyone can take part with confidence, and join in the celebration of cycling that is the Sky Sports London Freewheel.”

A rest area on the central route will include toilet facilities and information points.

The Sky Sports London Freewheel is part of the Mayor’s ‘Summer of Cycling’, which aims to encourage Londoners to dust off their bikes and experience London on two wheels. It is estimated that some 1.1 million Londoners have access to bikes but don’t use them regularly.
